Book Review: Obsidian (Lux #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Obsidian (Lux, #1)Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was a bit apprehensive at picking this book up, what with it being a YA and me being in my 20's.
It's getting harder and harder for me to find YA books that I still enjoy, so I am thrilled that I have found this series.

Despite the fact that this still had all the standard hallmarks that come with the majority of YA fiction, the Alien aspect was a refreshing change. I have previously read another set of books that go with the line of aliens blending in on earth and being at war with another alien race and found them pretty poor. I wish that author had read this. Armentrout has totally nailed bringing together the two world in this book making it flow and feel believable. She has a wonderful writing style that makes for easy reading, with some great world and character building to go along with it. I think it's brilliant and a good change for the main female character, Katy, to not be the cool and pretty one. I love that she is a nerdy bookworm and not stick thin. (I'm surprised that more author's don't have more bookworm characters, to be honest.) I like the personality she has, not to shy and not overly confident. She is in complete contrast to Daemon, who is overly confident/arrogant and some how still some what likable. I'm happy that where they stand with their relationship is still up in the air going into book two, as it takes away some of the usual predictability. The secondary characters are a fantastic mix of personalities that have clearly been considered as well as the main characters, and I'm interested to see how Katy's relationships with them develops.

I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it for your reading list. I can't wait to get started on book two.
